Obesity: A World Epidemic?

It is widely assumed that obesity only has negative effects on one’s health. Weight gain and obesity have long been linked to a variety of conditions that have negative effects on health, well-being, and longevity of a person. Rates of anxiety and depression are three to four times higher among obese individuals. In fact a number of health disorders and other problems are not only known to be caused but are believed to be exacerbated by obesity.

The world of popular culture, film, sports, teenage magazines and music is usually dominated by fit and slim people. It is generally accepted that these people are the role models and that people aspire to be like them. This kind of pressure further aggravates what over-weight people go through on a daily basis.

It is vital that people are fully aware of the dangers of obesity and the importance of healthy eating.Few of the many negative effects of obesity can be listed as cardiovascular, diabetes mellitus, gallbladder disease, psychosocial disabilities and musculoskeletal disorders. In addition, obese persons are believed to be at a greater risk than usual from surgery, anaesthesiaand accidents.

However, what one easily overlooks is the other areas where obese people face a difficulty. It is important to understand that obesity is both a medical condition and a lifestyle disorder. Both factors have to be seen within the context of an individual, family and societal functioning.Studies have shown that psycho-social disability is more common amongst obese people than amongst the non-obese. Obese people are subjected to social exclusion and are ridiculed by many. They are more self- conscious about their self image and may end up developing a low self esteem.

It is believed that obesity is usually caused by eating calorie dense food, high in fat and sugar content. Some researchers also blame the abundance, availability and variety of food to be one of the chief causes. Genetic factors are also believed to play a very important role in causing obesity. Long-term control of obesity requires a basic and permanent change in eating behaviour and exercise habits.

GarciniaCambogia is also known as Malabar tamarind fruit. This fruit contains an organic acid compound called Hydroxycitric Acid or HCA. This compound has been proven to be very useful in helping in controlling body weight.HCA is similar to citric acid found in lemons and other citrus fruits, but has very different properties.

During studies, GarciniaCambogia was found to reduce food intake by suppressing appetite, as well as decrease body fat. The regular use of HCA during exercise promotes fat burning. Further, it has also been suggested that HydroxycitricAcid or HCA can help people who have already attained their ideal weight in maintaining it.
